Joseph A. Quinlan, Jr.
Joseph A. Quinlan, Jr., was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall on Sept. 26, 2005.
Quinlan brings to Seton Hall a dynamic and impressive range of experiences in collegiate athletics. From 1998 to 2003 he was Senior Associate Athletic Director at Rutgers University and from 2003-05 held the title of Deputy Director of Athletics. Quinlan returns to Seton Hall, where he worked in the athletic department from 1986-89.
Quinlan’s broad-based experience includes a notable stint at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in the fall of 1994 where he directed the Meadowlands Organizing Committee for the 1996 NCAA Final Four. He was the primary contact between the NJSEA, co-host Rutgers University and the NCAA on all administrative matters for the Meadowlands Arena event. Quinlan’s leadership and organizational skills resulted in a promotion after the Final Four to Director of Operational Review and Analysis in the Office of the President/CEO for the NJSEA.
He served as primary advisor to President and CEO Robert E. Mulcahy III on all college athletics issues and staff liaison to the NJSEA Board of Commissioners. When Mulcahy was hired as Rutgers athletics director in April of 1998, Quinlan joined his staff as Senior Associate Athletic Director where he managed the day-to-day operations of Rutgers athletics department, including its 27 Olympic Sports as well as assisting in the administration of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Quinlan served on the BIG EAST Championships and Competition Committee from 1999-2005.
No stranger to Seton Hall, Quinlan worked for the Pirate athletic department from 1986-89. During the 1986-87 academic year, he was assistant sports information director where he assisted with sports information for men’s basketball and managed communications efforts for men’s and women’s track & field. In 1987, he was promoted to assistant director of athletics where he was responsible for a myriad of duties including scheduling, team travel and home game management.
In 1989, Quinlan moved to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, where he was the Assistant Director of the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. From 1992-1994, Quinlan was Assistant Athletics Director at St. Bonaventure University. He began his career in collegiate athletics at Loyola College in Baltimore, Md., as the Sports Information Director from 1984-86 before coming to Seton Hall.
Quinlan, 46, graduated from Slippery Rock State College in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in allied health and earned a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1983.
